Most of us know about the game blackjack. The objective is to either hit 21 or have a higher number than the dealer without going over 21. The number 21 wins here and in life. They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit. I believe it. Whether working out, getting over a bad breakup, practicing money management, etc. Implementing a new process can lead to new habits as long as the motivation to start leads to discipline for consistency. Why is this 21 day rule hard for most people? Sure, we get to day 3 and feel like we are on the right track. But the real test comes around day 7. It’s a pivotal point on our route to positive results. I’m guilty of failing many times. I used to want to workout and make it a consistent habit. I tried to cold turkey the whole process. Workout, eat healthy, avoid toxic social media posts, and practice time/money management. The problem I always came across was doing everything at one time often times failed (or in blackjack bust). It was hard to change my entire life. Sure people do it but often times something drastic needs to occur before the light comes on. For most, it’s a challenge we face every day. This didn’t work for me. However, I did find something that not only worked, but made the process easier to sustain.
Remember, it takes 21 days to create a habit. What if we broke down the 21 days into segments. For me, I call this the 777 rule. I wanted to live a healthy lifestyle and knew hitting the gym would be the foundation. Trying to workout, eat healthy, and spend money/time wisely at the same time felt like a death spiral as it’s hard to alter my everyday life. Going from Taco Bell chalupas to protein shakes is no small task! I thought to myself, let’s focus on one thing at a time. For the first 7 days, I focused on simply getting to the gym. It was hard but I removed the stress of eating healthy and spending time/money wisely. My main focus was creating a habit of waking up and finding myself in an almost empty parking lot at 5am. Seeing people walk in at that time was truly inspirational and knew each person had their own story to tell. Once I got to day 8, it was time to implement healthier food choices. Due to me hitting the gym, I started to lose interest in eating fast food. Trust me, saying goodbye to chalupas made me emotional but I had to do it. Once I got to day 15, I started to remove bad spending habits. I went from buying sandwiches and protein shakes to making meals at home. It was a process that worked for me. I went three months straight following this method and it worked! Did I go back to eating chalupas, you DAMN RIGHT! I’m not perfect. I however did get a taste of what positive change felt like and getting back into the groove was easier than when I initially started. We all want to see results quick. Following a process for positive change is a lifetime commitment. I simply want to share my 777 game plan in hopes you beat the dealer. The dealers name…Life
